In 1893, Kokichi Mikimoto achieved what many believed was impossible: the creation of the world's first cultured pearl.
From this breakthrough, Mikimoto has gone on to define the finest pearl jewellery for well over a century. Martin & Co is delighted to bring a curated selection of Mikimoto's pearl jewellery to the Cotswolds.
Mikimoto Pearls
Only pearls that meet Mikimoto's most exacting standards earn the right to carry the Mikimoto name – on average, fewer than ten per cent of all those harvested. Quality is assessed across five criteria: lustre, nacre thickness, shape, size, and colour. Of these, lustre is perhaps the most prized; the thicker and more even the nacre, the deeper and more luminous the pearl's glow.
