Many are choosing to celebrate their engagement with a coloured gemstone. What colour will you choose?

Can any gemstone beat a clear, sparkling diamond for an engagement ring? There’s something about the purity of a colourless diamond that makes it a timeless and still very popular choice. But, beautiful as a colourless diamond is, don’t overlook the allure of a coloured gemstone. In fact, there’s a growing trend for engagement rings that feature a coloured stone as their centrepiece. Whether it’s a yellow diamond, a red ruby, blue sapphire, or green emerald, gemstones come with an almost infinite choice of colours that can make an engagement ring really stand out.

Celebrity engagements in colour

One of the most famous modern day engagement rings featuring a coloured gemstone is the 12ct
blue sapphire ring presented by Prince William to his then fiancée Kate Middleton; a ring which formerly belonged to Diana, Princess of Wales. Other luminaries who have chosen a coloured gemstone to celebrate their engagement include Jennifer Lopez who announced her engagement last year to Ben Affleck with a green 8.5ct cushion cut diamond, and tennis star Anna Kournikova who celebrated her engagement with an Argyle pink 11ct pear-shaped diamond.

Choose your colour

The challenge of course is, given the colour choice, how best to go about choosing that perfect ring? Finding a gemstone that reflects the recipient’s favourite colour is an obvious choice, but it could also be the colour of their birthstone. Every month represents a different birthstone from the garnet red of January to the blue topaz of December. The colour of the recipient’s hair – American Idol winner and country singer Carrie Underwood received a yellow diamond to match her blonde look – or skin tone can influence the choice of gemstone colour. And there is also the symbolism of colours to explore: red can mean passion and energy, while green can reflect harmony and wealth.
