If anyone thought pearls had been consigned to a bygone age, a ringside seat at the red carpet for this year’s Met Gala would have persuaded them otherwise. Known as “fashion’s biggest night out”, the New York hosted fashion extravaganza had its usual quota of celebrities, but what really stood out was how many of those stars were bedecked in pearls.
Red carpet pearls
American model Gigi Hadid showed off a layered pearl necklace, while singer Phoebe Bridgers’ gown included pearls embroidered onto her dress, and Brooklyn Beckham proved that wearing pearls can be gender neutral by showing off strands of different sized pearl necklaces. The prize for wearing the most pearls however must go to socialite and reality TV star Kim Kardashian who wore a Schiaparelli dress covered in strings of pearls.

But why wait for a red carpet invitation to show off the beauty and glamour of an exquisite piece of pearl jewellery? The attraction of pearls – beyond their natural lustre of course – is the flexible ways in which they can be worn to suit any occasion.
For something perhaps more subtle than Kim Kardashian’s pearl choice, Cheltenham jeweller Martin & Co offers a beautiful pair of platinum Akoya Pearl and diamond drop stud earrings with a single Japanese Akoya cultured pearl, suspended beneath round brilliant cut diamonds. These gorgeous earrings are fitted with post and butterfly fittings for pierced ears. But if the occasion demands a little more flamboyance, how about a strand of 74 Akoya cultured pearls – up to 8.5 mm in diameter – with diamond set clasp to form a lariat tassel? The tassel end is pyramid shaped and set with round brilliant cut diamonds.
Something in between could be a beautiful 18ct white gold chain bracelet with alternating Akoya and Tahitian pearls with five sparkling diamonds. Or a stunning 18ct white gold Olive dress ring by Mikimoto set with four Akoya cultured pearls and twinkling diamonds.
